AI visibility for small business: what gets you recommended

28 August 2026 · About a 4 minute read

You have noticed it yourself: you search for something on your phone, and an AI answer now sits at the top, before any of the links. Your customers see the same thing when they search for what you do. The answer reads out a few local businesses, what they offer and how they are rated, and for most people that is the whole journey. They ring one of the names in the answer. If your business is not in it, the enquiry goes to one that is.

That answer is what AI visibility means, and the same work gets sold as AI SEO or answer engine optimisation. Your customers have not changed. They search the way they always have. What changed is what greets them first, and whether you are in it comes down to whether your business is set up to be read.

How do I check if AI can find my business?

Run three searches on your phone, and judge only the AI answer at the top each time, because that is where most customers stop.

Figure: the three searches
SearchWhat you are checking
"[what you do] [your suburb]"Are you on the shortlist it reads out, or are your competitors?
Your business nameDoes it have you right: services, suburb, a current phone number?
Your business name, spelled slightly wrongDoes it still find you the way a customer who half remembers you would?

If no AI answer appears on the first search, open the AI Mode tab in Google and ask the same question there.

Wrong facts matter as much as missing ones. An answer that quotes your old phone number or a service you stopped offering is pointing customers away from you while sounding confident about it.

We run these three searches on every business before we ever meet them, and one result keeps repeating: the answer knows the business exists, then recommends somebody else, because somebody else left it more to read. The sharpest case we have seen came down to one letter. Spelled right, the business came back with its services and reviews. One letter out, and the answer offered alternatives instead.

Why is your business missing from the answer?

Because the answer can only repeat what it can read about you, and most small business websites and listings leave it very little. A website with no prices and no suburb, a Google Business Profile claimed years ago and half filled in, reviews nobody replies to: none of that gives the answer anything solid to quote, so it quotes the business up the road.

Figure: what the answer reads about you
Where it readsWhat it takes from there
Your websiteWhat you do, where you do it, what it costs
Your Google Business ProfileServices, hours, photos, and whether the listing looks alive
Your reviews and ratingsWho gets recommended ahead of whom
Directories and social pagesWhether your name, phone number and suburb agree everywhere

One phone number that disagrees across these is enough to make the answer unsure which facts are yours.

Reviews earn a sentence of their own. They are a core reason one business gets cited ahead of another, so the businesses winning this are the ones that ask after every good job and reply to what comes in.

What can you set up yourself?

Quite a lot, and none of it needs us. Start at business.google.com: claim your profile and fill in every section, the services, the hours, photos, the suburbs you cover. Ask your happy customers for a review and reply to the ones already there. Then check that your name, phone number and suburb read identically on your website, your social pages and every directory that lists you. You can set all of this up yourself in an afternoon. Your social pages help too, but treat them as the front doors, not the house.

The house is a website of your own that gives the answer everything it needs: what you do, where, and for how much, kept current because your systems live behind it. That is the work we do: websites, email marketing and AI automations for Australian small businesses.

What does fixing it cost?

Our prices are flat and published. The Website + Email Build is $5,950, for when the website itself is what the answer has nothing to read from. The Engine is $3,500, for when the site is fine and the systems behind it are what is missing. The 60 minute consult is $295, credited toward a build, and those three searches are part of how we prepare for one: we run them on your business before we ever sit down with you. The full list of what we set up, layer by layer, is on our AI search and SEO for small business page.

We set our own business up this way before selling a single build, and wrote up the working proof in the business you are looking at.

Where to start

Run your three searches this morning. If the answer already names you with the right facts, keep going as you are. Most businesses on the Sunshine Coast are still behind on this, so being early is still available, and every listing you fix and every review you answer moves you up the shortlist. If you would rather we build it, answer a few short questions. A real person reads your answers and replies within 4 business hours. We worked through what that looks like for a local pub, where the search is for a playground or a parmy night.
